Sports & musculoskeletal physiotherapy

A proper assessment first. Then a plan you can follow.

McFerran Physio is led by Alan McFerran, who spent eleven years working with professional footballers at Bristol City Football Club before opening the clinic. That background sets the standard: work out what is genuinely driving the problem, treat it, then build the strength and capacity that stop it coming back.

Every new patient starts with a full forty-five minute one-to-one assessment. No triage appointment, no assistant, no protocol pulled off a shelf because the diagnosis sounds familiar. You get a clear explanation, an honest view of the timescale, and a plan written for the week you actually have.

Clifton is one of the more active postcodes in the city, and it shows in what arrives at the clinic: runners on the Downs, climbers, rowers, rugby and hockey players, gym members off Whiteladies Road, and a steady stream of people whose necks and backs have not forgiven a long stretch at a laptop. The treatments we offer cover the range, from hands-on soft tissue work and spinal mobilisation through to exercise prescription, acupuncture and hyaluronic acid joint injections where a joint needs settling before rehab can start.

Where you will be seen

Two Bristol clinics. One is ten minutes from the village.

01

Queen Square

57 Queen Charlotte Street, Bristol BS1 4HQ

The closest clinic to Clifton, straight down through the city and easy to reach on foot, by bike or by bus if driving into the centre does not appeal. Same clinician and the same forty-five minute assessment as Cribbs, in a quiet consulting room off the square.

Mondays only · 08:30–18:30

02

Cribbs Causeway

Clifton Rugby Club, Station Road, Patchway, Bristol BS10 7TB

Our main base for the rest of the week, and worth the short drive if you want the gym. Free on-site parking, level access and use of the LIFT gym next door, which means the strength half of your rehab is coached in front of you rather than emailed over as a PDF. Despite the name, Clifton Rugby Club plays at Cribbs Causeway, not in Clifton itself.

Mon–Fri 07:00–20:00 · Closed Saturday and Sunday

What comes through the door

What we most often treat for people in Clifton

Not an exhaustive list, but a fair picture of a normal week. If your problem is not on it, that does not mean we cannot help — it means it is worth a phone call first.

Running injuries

Shin pain, Achilles trouble, ITB and knee pain from the Downs loop, the Portway and the climb back up to the village. Load management and targeted strength rather than blanket rest.

Knee ligament and cartilage injuries

Rugby, hockey, skiing and football knees, including full ACL reconstruction rehabilitation with objective testing before any return to sport is signed off.

Shoulder pain from gym and climbing

Rotator cuff irritation, impingement and AC joint pain from pressing, hanging and heavy pulling. We test the shoulder rather than guess at it.

Neck and upper back pain

Long stretches at a laptop, in the library or in back-to-back meetings, then a hard weekend. We work on capacity and loading, not lectures about sitting up straight.

Hip and groin pain

Persistent groin pain in footballers and runners is frequently mismanaged. Accurate diagnosis first, then a graded plan that actually loads the tissue.

Ankle sprains and osteoarthritis

Sprains that never quite settled on Clifton’s steep streets, and irritable arthritic joints where an injection can create the window for rehab to begin.

How it works

Diagnose. Treat. Strengthen. Return.

01

Assess

Forty-five minutes, one to one. History, movement testing and objective strength measures, so the plan is built on numbers rather than a hunch. You leave knowing what the problem is.

02

Treat

Hands-on work where it genuinely earns its place — soft tissue therapy, spinal mobilisation, acupuncture, injection therapy — used to open a window for rehab rather than as the treatment itself.

03

Strengthen and return

Coached strength work, progressed against measurable targets, so going back to running, climbing or sport is a decision you can defend rather than a gamble.

Common questions

Clifton, answered

  • Where is your nearest physio clinic to Clifton?

57 Queen Charlotte Street, BS1 4HQ, about ten minutes from Clifton Village and walkable in good weather. For the rest of the week we are at Clifton Rugby Club on Station Road, BS10 7TB, by Cribbs Causeway, where parking is free. Both are listed on the locations page.

  • Is the Clifton Rugby Club clinic actually in Clifton?

No, and it catches people out. Clifton Rugby Club plays at Station Road by Cribbs Causeway, BS10 7TB, roughly fifteen minutes north of Clifton Village. If you want the closer option, book Queen Square.

  • Do I need a GP referral to be seen?

No. Physiotherapy in the UK is a self-referral profession, so you can book directly. If your problem needs onward referral for imaging or a surgical opinion we will tell you plainly and write to your GP or consultant.

  • How long is a first appointment, and what does it cost?

A first appointment is forty-five minutes and costs £70. Follow-up appointments are thirty minutes at £60. You are with the same clinician throughout.

  • Can I claim on private health insurance?

Yes. Most major insurers are accepted. Contact your insurer first for an authorisation number and bring it to the appointment, and we will invoice accordingly.

  • How quickly can I be seen?

Usually within a few days, and often sooner. You can book online at either clinic, or call 07912 675 343 if you would rather talk it through first.
