Sports & musculoskeletal physiotherapy

A proper assessment first. Then a plan that fits your shift pattern.

McFerran Physio is led by Alan McFerran, who spent eleven years with professional footballers at Bristol City Football Club before opening the clinic. That background shapes the approach: find what is actually driving the problem, treat it, then build the strength and capacity that stops it returning.

Every new patient gets a full forty-five minute one-to-one assessment. No triage appointment, no handing you over to an assistant, no generic protocol applied to everyone with the same diagnosis. You leave with a clear explanation, an honest view of the likely timescale, and a plan built around the week you actually have rather than an idealised one.

Filton has a particular mix. A great deal of skilled engineering and aerospace work happens within a couple of miles of the clinic, and that work loads shoulders, necks and lower backs in ways a desk job does not. Add early starts, shift patterns and a genuinely active local population, and you get two very different sets of problems. The treatments we offer cover both, from hands-on soft tissue work and spinal mobilisation through to exercise prescription, acupuncture and hyaluronic acid joint injections where a joint needs settling before rehab can begin.

What comes through the door

What we most often treat for people in Filton

Not an exhaustive list, but a fair picture of a normal week. If your problem is not on it, that does not mean we cannot help — it means it is worth a phone call first.

Shoulder and neck pain from overhead work

Hours spent working at or above shoulder height at a bench or on a structure will find a weak rotator cuff eventually. We test the shoulder objectively rather than guessing at it.

Lower back pain from long shifts and longer drives

Standing all day, or sitting in traffic on the A38 and the M5, then doing something demanding at the weekend. We look at loading and capacity, not just at posture.

Running injuries

Shin pain, Achilles trouble and knee pain picked up on Concorde Way, the local road loops and the runs out towards the Downs. Load management plus targeted strength, not blanket rest.

Football, rugby and five-a-side

Hamstring strains, groin pain and knee injuries from midweek and Saturday sport. Staged return-to-play criteria and objective testing before you go back.

Gym and lifting injuries

Irritated cuffs, sore elbows and stiff backs from the leisure centre and the local strength gyms. Usually a technique and progression problem rather than a reason to stop training.

Knee, thumb and big-toe osteoarthritis

Where a joint is too irritable to rehab, a hyaluronic acid injection can settle it enough to start the strength work. We say plainly when it is not appropriate.

How it works

Diagnose. Treat. Strengthen. Return.

01

Assess

Forty-five minutes, one to one. History, movement testing and objective strength measures, so the plan comes from data rather than a hunch. You leave knowing what the problem is.

02

Treat

Hands-on work where it genuinely earns its place — soft tissue therapy, spinal mobilisation, acupuncture, injection therapy — used to open a window for rehab, not as the whole treatment.

03

Strengthen and return

Coached strength work in the gym next door, progressed against measurable targets, so going back to work, running or sport is a decision rather than a gamble.

Common questions

Filton, answered

  • Where is your nearest physio clinic to Filton?

Clifton Rugby Club on Station Road, BS10 7TB, by Cribbs Causeway — roughly five minutes from most of BS34, with free parking on site. Our second clinic is at 57 Queen Charlotte Street in the city centre. Both are on the locations page.

  • Do I need a GP referral to be seen?

No. Physiotherapy in the UK is a self-referral profession, so you can book directly. If your problem needs onward referral for imaging or a surgical opinion we will tell you plainly and write to your GP or consultant.

  • How long is a first appointment, and what does it cost?

A first appointment is forty-five minutes and costs £70. Follow-up appointments are thirty minutes at £60. You are with the same clinician throughout.

  • Can I claim on private health insurance?

Yes. Most major insurers are accepted. Contact your insurer first for an authorisation number and bring it to the appointment, and we will invoice accordingly.

  • Do you only treat sports injuries?

No. A large share of the work is everyday musculoskeletal pain — necks, shoulders, backs, hips and knees — in people who have never played sport. The method is the same: assess properly, treat, then build strength.

  • How quickly can I be seen?

Usually within a few days, and often sooner. You can book online at either clinic, or call 07912 675 343 if you would rather talk it through first.
