Sports & musculoskeletal physiotherapy

A proper assessment first. Then a plan you can follow.

McFerran Physio is led by Alan McFerran, who spent eleven years working with professional footballers at Bristol City Football Club before opening the clinic. That background shapes how we work: find the actual driver of the problem, treat it, then build the strength and capacity that stops it coming back.

Every new patient starts with a full forty-five minute one-to-one assessment. No triage appointment, no assistant, no fixed protocol applied to everyone with the same diagnosis. You get a clear explanation of what is going on, an honest view of how long it is likely to take, and a plan written for your week rather than an idealised one.

That matters in Bradley Stoke, because the problems we see here tend to arrive from two very different directions: desk-based work in the north-fringe business parks, and a genuinely active local population. The treatments we offer cover both, from hands-on soft tissue work and spinal mobilisation through to exercise prescription, acupuncture and hyaluronic acid joint injections where a joint needs settling before rehab can start.

What comes through the door

What we most often treat for people in Bradley Stoke

Not an exhaustive list, but it is a fair picture of a normal week. If your problem is not here, it does not mean we cannot help — it means it is worth a phone call first.

Desk-driven neck and back pain

Long weeks at Aztec West, Almondsbury and the north-fringe business parks, then a full weekend of activity. Postural loading, not fragility, is usually the culprit.

Running injuries

Patellar and Achilles tendinopathy from the Three Brooks trails, the Savages Wood loops and the run into Cribbs. Load management plus targeted strength, not blanket rest.

Football and five-a-side injuries

Hamstring strains, groin pain and knee injuries from Saturday and midweek football. Assessment, staged return-to-play criteria and objective testing before you go back.

Shoulder pain from lifting

Rotator cuff irritation and impingement picked up in the gym at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre and the local strength gyms. We test it rather than guess at it.

Ankle and ligament injuries

Netball, hockey and rugby ankle sprains that never quite settled. Balance, strength and confidence rebuilt in stages you can measure.

Knee, thumb and big-toe osteoarthritis

Where a joint is too irritable to rehab, hyaluronic acid injection can calm it enough to get the strength work started. We say honestly when it is not appropriate.

How it works

Diagnose. Treat. Strengthen. Return.

01

Assess

Forty-five minutes, one to one. History, movement testing and objective strength measures so we are working from data rather than a hunch. You leave knowing what the problem is.

02

Treat

Hands-on work where it genuinely helps — soft tissue therapy, spinal mobilisation, acupuncture, injection therapy — used to make the rehab possible, not sold as the cure on its own.

03

Strengthen and return

Progressive loading with milestones you can see, coached in the gym on site. We retest before you go back to sport, so returning is a decision rather than a gamble.

Common questions

Bradley Stoke, answered

  • Where is your nearest physio clinic to Bradley Stoke?

Clifton Rugby Club on Station Road, BS10 7TB, by Cribbs Causeway. For most of BS32 it is around ten minutes by car, and parking is free and on site. Our second clinic is at 57 Queen Charlotte Street in the city centre if that suits your working day better. Both are listed on the locations page.

  • Do I need a GP referral to be seen?

No. Physiotherapy in the UK is a self-referral profession, so you can book directly. If your problem needs onward referral for imaging or a surgical opinion, we will tell you plainly and write to your GP or consultant.

  • How long is a first appointment, and what does it cost?

Initial assessments are forty-five minutes and cost £70. Follow-up appointments are thirty minutes at £60. You get the full appointment with the physiotherapist, one to one, for the whole of it.

  • Can I use private health insurance?

Often, yes. Check with your insurer first and get an authorisation number before your appointment, because without one you would be liable for the cost and would need to claim it back yourself.

  • Do you only treat sports injuries?

No. Roughly half of what we see is everyday musculoskeletal pain — necks, backs, shoulders, hips and knees — in people who have never played a sport in their lives. The assessment is the same either way.

  • How quickly can I be seen?

Usually within a few days, and often sooner. You can book online at either clinic, or call 07912 675 343 if you would rather talk it through first.
